In 2011, the Komische Oper Berlin launched the intercultural project »Selam Opera!«. It takes the Komische Oper Berlin’s self-image as an “opera house for everyone” quite literally and aims to create occasions for encounters between urban society and opera. In the long term, the networks between the opera house and the people in the city are to be strengthened, thereby working toward an improved culture of community life. »Hadi Bakalım – Let´s get started« is the name of the current program, which encourages us to set off into something new with playfulness and a wink. Already with the first yearning notes of the violin, a few in the audience are pricking up their ears: isn’t that . . . yes, evet, that’s Hababam Sınıfı! Then Carmen joins the fray, quickly followed by Rossini operas, Berliner operetta duets, and fresh new arrangements of boisterous pop songs. The singing taxi-bus’ eleventh year has resulted in this lively greatest hits program, encouraging the audience with a call of ‘let’s just see what happens!’
