Ligeti Quartet

The quartet named themselves after the Hungarian composer György Ligeti (1923-2006), inspired by his kaleidoscopic musical outlook
Ligeti Quartet presents a concert highlighting recent music and collaborations with Anna Meredith, Mandhira de Saram, Sean Noonan and Christian Mason. Their album “Nuc” (Mercury KX, 2023) is the first studio recording of original music by Anna Meredith for string quartet, combined with new arrangements of her tracks by the Quartet’s violist Richard Jones. The result is a joyful and bittersweet, energetic and restful, never too serious collection that dazzles with Meredith’s signature compulsive harmonies, rhythmic shifts of gear and sparkling textures. Elizabeth Alker (BBC Radio 3) described it as “Pop meets the avant-garde. A match made in art music heaven!” In their continual search to expand the string quartet vocabulary and push their craft to the limits, the Quartet’s programme also includes music from their “Nouvelles Etudes” (14 miniatures celebrating György Ligeti), and their throat-singing inspired Songbooks project with Ernst von Siemens prizewinner Christian Mason
