Floex Ensemble feat. Josef the Robot (off:CN Showcase)

Czech Republic
Modern classical sextet vs robot playing real acoustic drums. Is it possible to make it work together?
The ensemble’s performance is based on two ambivalent principles – a modern classical sextet vs. a robot playing real acoustic drums. Is it possible to make it work together? Let’s face it, even classical musicians are a bit like robots in that they play music to a score (they are pre-programmed) and the interpretation is what really makes the difference. A robot is just a machine, but its performance still evokes emotions and feelings. Accuracy usually has positive connotations in the classical music world, especially when it comes to drummers. But is this also true if the band member is not human? Floex is originally an electronic music composer and interactive artist. Most of the program includes his soundtrack work, especially for cult art games such as Machinarium, Samorost, Papetura or contemporary dance plays and films. The pieces performed by the group have been reverse-engineered by arranger Jan Šikl to its musical core so that they can be performed purely acoustically. Tomáš Dvořák (Floex) – clarinet, electronics Jakub Tengler – vibraphone Judita Škodová – violoncello Kateřina Krejčová – violin Anežka Jiráčková – viola Jiří Javůrek – bassclarinet Jan Šikl – conductor
