Why classical music is not just European

Rethinking the history of music through a global lens

Did you know music of composers like Hadyn or Mozart originated in places like Persia, Africa, and China? Come learn about this interesting history.

When one thinks of “classical” music, they make of think of an opera by Giuseppe Verdi, a symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven, or a fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach. All of these well known composers are European and what they wrote has been known as art or classical music. This implies that this music was created solely by Europeans with no other influences. However, it shall be seen in this session that classical (art) music actually belongs to the world. In fact, it will be demonstrated that the music of composers such as Mozart, Hadyn, and Wagner would not have existed without influence from places such as Mesopotamia, Persia, Africa, India and China. Through musical examples and audience participation, this session will guide musicians, educators, conductors, and private instructors on how to listen, perform, and teach classical music and it’s history through a global lens.
