Mentoring Session

Playing from memory

Opportunities and challenges of playing by heart

More and more orchestras and ensembles are playing entire symphonic works from memory – a trend seems to be emerging. What is the motivation behind it? Will this practice catch on, even outside the independent scene?

We will look at what actually happens when you get rid of sheet music, music stands and chairs and start memorising your repertoire. What does it do to the musicians? How do the rehearsal phases work? We’ll talk about where the dangers lurk and what creative opportunities arise. In the mentoring sessions we’ll discuss what this type of performance means for audiences and performers.
