Opera Is Dead. Long Live Opera

Reinventing the Opera House as Innovation, Technology, and Community

As emerging technologies reshape how we connect, how can opera houses unlock new means of presence and performance?

Victoria Dietrich, and Claudio Rimmele propose reimagining opera venues as dynamic hubs—uniting AI-driven dialogues and music, climate activism, and community building. They explore future digital stages, analog-digital interplay, and innovative spaces beyond traditional venues

Opera often feels like a relic of the past, far removed from younger generations. But can it evolve into a vibrant laboratory for innovation and meaningful encounters? Two innovators share practical and inspiring approaches: from climate-focused concerts combining musicians, scientists, and activists; to yoga events transforming formal opera spaces; and a mixed-reality experience inspired by Wagner’s RING cycle.

Beyond physical reinvention, the speakers also envision new digital stages, blending virtual and real-world experiences. This talk illustrates how opera houses can become relevant, inclusive, and transformative—resonating across generations and disciplines.
