ZONAR

(The Netherlands)

Zonar is a new series of original works by the North Sea String Quartet that dives into electronic music worlds on acoustic strings through prepared instruments, extended techniques, and vibrant improvisations.

The North Sea String Quartet is one of the most adventurous and genre-fluid string ensembles in Europe. Founded in 2016 and based in the Netherlands, the quartet has developed a distinctive identity at the intersection of classical, jazz, and global music. All members are classically trained and deeply rooted in improvisation, continually pushing the boundaries of what a string quartet can be.

Known for their rhythmic drive, versatility, and sonic curiosity, NSSQ has performed at leading venues and festivals including Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam, North Sea Jazz Festival (NL), November Music (NL), Jazz & The City Festival (AT), Sparks & Vision Festival (DE), Canarias Jazz & Mas (ES), and Funchal Jazz Festival (PT). They have collaborated with artists such as Trio da Kali, Samora Pinderhughes, and Ambrose Akinmusire.

Their newest project, ZONAR, immerses the acoustic string quartet in the sonic worlds of electronic music through prepared instruments, extended techniques, and collective composition, creating immersive contemporary music without using electronics.
