They combine traditional musical elements such as Gondang (Bataknese Gendang) playing and andung vocalization techniques, which are expressions of Batak oral literary forms, with experimental musical approaches. Through its works, Saodor Ensemble seeks to bridge traditional heritage with contemporary innovations, providing a new outlook on how tradition can be relevant in the context of the present and future.
“Lungun” is a work released by Jessica & Saodor Ensemble in 2024, inspired by the Toba Batak andung tradition. Lungun, which means “sadness” reflects the expression of grief in Batak death ceremonies. The tradition involves emotional singing resembling weeping, bringing the listener to a profound experience of loss. “Lungun” revives this tradition with the musical format of a 5-voice experimental vocal ensemble, enriching its texture with the elaboration of the Batak sulim instrument, piano, and electronic synthesized sound. With creative elaboration, this work becomes a medium to convey a universal message of grief, hope, and cultural sustainability. This showcase honors the roots of Batak culture and offers a fresh musical dialog for a global audience.
