Hlaskontrabas Oktet

(Czech Republic)

Hlaskontrabas Oktet is an expanded voice-and-double-bass ensemble blending jazz, improvisation, and contemporary music, featuring original compositions that balance intimacy, experimentation, and powerful collective energy.

Hlaskontrabas is a project founded by singer and performer Ridina Ahmedová and double bassist Petr Tichý, which has grown into an octet after years of successful collaboration. Known for their distinctive interplay of voice and double bass, the duo invited six outstanding personalities from the Czech music scene to form the Hlaskontrabas Oktet.

The repertoire was composed specifically for this unique line-up of four double basses and four vocalists by commissioned composers from Norway, Israel, Iceland, and the Czech Republic. The resulting music creates a rich and layered sound world, blending jazz, contemporary music, improvisation, and experiment. It moves fluidly between delicate intimacy and raw collective energy, combining strong atmosphere, emotional depth, and playfulness.

Hlaskontrabas Oktet has performed in the Czech Republic and internationally. Their debut album Kaleidoscapes (2024) was nominated for the Anděl Award and won the Czech Radio Award for Best Czech Jazz Album of 2024, demonstrating that original Czech music can be both experimental and accessible.
