Exhibiting the Intangible

Curating Music in Museums

PANEL | Music cannot be hung on a wall — exhibiting it means addressing its intangible nature. How can museums transform music into spatial and experiential encounters that engage audiences beyond listening?

This panel brings together three directors of pioneering institutions in music exhibition-making: Jade Bouchemit (Musée de la Musique – Philharmonie de Paris), Márton Horn (House of Music Hungary, Budapest), and Simon Posch (Haus der Musik, Vienna). Each will begin with a short case study highlighting different approaches to storytelling and interactivity in exhibitions where music is the central theme.

The presentations will lead into a dialogue between the speakers on curatorial strategies — offering audiences new ways of connecting with classical music and with music of all genres. This will be followed by a conversation with the audience, focusing on how music museums can act as gateways to deeper and more inclusive forms of musical engagement.
