Showcase

Anzû Quartet

(USA)

Formed in 2020 in New York, the Anzû Quartet is an all-star ensemble dedicated to the music of our time and the recent canon.

A collaboration between internationally renowned performers of contemporary music from Bang on a Can, Eighth Blackbird and Mivos Quartet, the quartet pays homage to Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps by actively commissioning and performing new works for this iconic instrumentation alongside Messiaen’s original masterpiece.

Anzû’s showcase will feature jazz-influenced works from their upcoming album, adjust (Cantaloupe Music), by Ken Thomson and Anna Webber (“one of the most creative artists of the current century” – Peter Margasak) as well as a new commission from Iranian composer Aftab Darvishi whose To… Serenity was written in the aftermath of the death of Mahsa Amini.

Finally, they will preview their second album — a gripping new take on Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps — reexamining the Messiaen urtext as a contemporary, vital masterpiece, featuring video art by Xuan.

Anzû’s recent seasons have featured performances across the US, Germany, Austria, Lithuania, Latvia, the Netherlands, and Croatia. In its short history, they have commissioned new works from Anna Webber, Aftab Darvishi, Ryan Carter, and Mario Diaz de Leon.

Anzû Quartet’s appearance is thanks to the Amphion Foundation and the Johnstone Fund for New Music.
